A mutual fund is an investment option in which a pool of money is collected from several investors to invest in multiple asset classes such as stocks, bonds, dividends, etc. 

Professional firms manage them called Asset Management Company (AMC), which are recognized by the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI). AMC employs professional investment managers, also referred to as Fund Managers, who manage the portfolio on a day-to-day basis on behalf of the investors.
